JAGUAR JMS 10.23.02 Document Information:

Title
Calcium Treated Resulphurised Steels

Jaguar Car Ltd

Publication Date:
Jul 30, 2002

Scope:

B SCOPE 1 When an improvement is required in the machineability of non-leaded sulphur containing steels, it has proved possible to increase the sulphur level and improve the machineability without undue loss of mechanical properties. This is achieved by ladle addition of calcium compounds to aluminium killed steel. This has the effect of modifying the shape of the sulphide inclusions and hence their behaviour by causing them to be less elongated and thus reducing their adverse effect on toughness. 2 When it is required to replace leaded steels with a specified sulphur content in excess of 0.06%, they may be directly substituted with sulphur content within the range 0.07 - 0.10%. The substitution of leaded low sulphur (0.026 - 0.15%) steels by calcium treated steels containing 0.07 - 0.1% sulphur will require the approval of Jaguar Product Engineering Materials Engineer. 3 Calcium steels in all other properties conform to the chemical analysis specified
