Title
Dynamometer Road Noise Evaluation Procedure
GM Worldwide
Publication Date:
Dec 1, 2005
Scope:
The Road Noise Master Test Procedure, GMW8460, shall be referenced for more detailed information corresponding to the following procedure.
The road noise dynamometer procedure is an optional tool that can be used to aid in the development and approximation of a VTS. To use the road noise dynamometer a vehicle must first be run on road per GMW8460, then on the dynamometer per this procedure. A road-lab correction factor can be calculated from the difference in the spectral results (in each 1/3-octave band at each microphone position) and applied to future dynamometer testing results to estimate on-road noise performance. Final VTS validation must be performed using GMW8460.
Note: Nothing in the specification supersedes applicable laws and regulations unless specific exemption has been obtained.
Note: In the event of conflict between the English and domestic language, the English language shall take precedence.
Purpose.
To approximate road noise in a laboratory environment.
Foreword.
A road Noise Dynamometer is a 2 Wheel (3.048 m diameter) dynamometer with an epoxy molded road surface bolted on. The surfaces should be made from castings of the targeted road surfaces (i.e., smooth asphalt and stud damaged concrete). The input to the vehicle running on the dynamometer will be periodic random compared to the truly random road surface, since the road surface covers are divided into equal length sections. Discrepancies between actual road and dynamometer results will occur.
Applicability.
This procedure applies to all fully trimmed vehicles.
