Purpose. The purpose of this test is to evaluate the fatigue performance of the piston pin when subjected to design load or other designated loads so as to produce bending and ovalization stresses. This procedure is used to validate piston pins produced by current and new suppliers. The procedure is one of the test criteria utilized for development, validation and quality audit testing of piston pins, not the billet. This procedure is generally required as a A/B comparison purposes when change to process, material, heat treatment, and or supplier is intended.

In general, the test set-up should allow the piston pin to experience similar conditions as in connecting rod, piston and pin assembly.

Applicability. The procedure is written in generic terms to cover all types of piston pins, and applicable to regular fatigue test and step fatigue test.
