The test detailed in this procedure was developed in an attempt to simulate known in service failures. The failures typically occurred in cold climates (lower than -10°C) on vehicles that were lightly laden, at low mileage¿s and with little dynamic input. Both the piston rod displacement and mid-stroke were selected as being "not unreasonable", whilst the frequency was selected to minimise damper warm up. The type of side load application, being cycled from fully on to fully off with fully on being phased to occur at maximum damper extension, was selected as being easily achievable and reasonably representative of the fully reversed condition experienced by X40 rear dampers. Subsequent warranty data has shown that, to date, damper seal packs that pass this test perform well in service in markets where temperatures as low as minus 40 degrees centigrade are experienced.
