Scope:
This specification covers the properties of glass fiber bonded
sheet of materials that may be used for thermal insulation and
noise control in the engine compartment and other nonpassenger
areas of vehicles.
Material Description.
The materials identified by this specification are composed of
glass fibers in a sheet form and shall be resilient, flexible, and
homogeneous. The material shall be free of excessive dust out,
lumps, binder spots, cracks and shingling effects. The sheet may be
of a laminated construction. The sheet must not transfer fibers to
the hand during shipping, handling, or installation in the car.
Material Identification.
Type I materials utilizes an inert binder which is primarily
composed of a phenol resin.
Type II materials utilizes a binder system where the phenol
resin content is < 50% by weight of the total binder content.
Type II materials provide improved material handling and reduced
dust out.
