The Joint Committee on National Transportation Communications for Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) Protocol (NTCIP) accepted NTCIP 8004 v02 - Structure and Identification of Management Information (SMI) - version 02 as a user comment draft.
The standard publication is in the 8000 series of NTCIP process and control documents.
The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO), Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) and the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) are distributing copies to their members to solicit user comments.
The two most important changes in NTCIP 8004 v02 are:
- The object subfields are revised to align with revisions in NTCIP 8005.
- A subclause was added to set rules for defining and revising both new and existing objects.
The NTCIP 8004 SMI specifies a set of rules and protocols for organizing, describing and defining transportation management information to be exchanged between transportation management applications and/or transportation equipment, so they interoperate with each other.
NTCIP 8004 is based on the Internet Advisory Board Standard (IAB STD) 16 - Structure and Identification of Management Information for TCP/IP-based Internets and International Organization for Standardization / International Electrotechnical Commission (ISO/IEC) 8824 - Abstract Syntax Notation One (ASN.1).
NTCIP 8004 SMI covers four major areas:
- Organization and object identification.
- Object specifications.
- Meta attributes.
- Management information bases.
